You..Me..Congestion and Warming..
As I watch the traffic getting piled up at the Madhya Kailash junction while boarding the train, i wonder how it would look like if everyone driving a car decides to travel in the bus or train. How it would look like if chennai had separate cycle tracks on the road for souls like me who would simply love cycling to work. I wonder how would it be if all of us carry a "Thuni Pai" (A bag made of cloth) while buying vegetables, instead of picking that hideous plastic bag. All of these doesn't sound any where close to being "Cool" , but will definitely have an impact on our lives and our cities. All that it requires is a little bit of thought, initiative and some amount of pride in doing that.Judicious consumer choices can go a long way in driving the industrial world.A lack of that is making our lives miserable.Perhaps, it can be attributed to the distinct lack of social responsibility even amongst our educated lot. We keep blaming the government for the congestion, trash and pollution forgetting the fact that all these were our creation.Let's not forget that the government is as intelligent and committed as the people who get them voted to power.I am as culpable for these acts, what i call treason. But honest attempts are indeed on to do something about these. Traveling to work by Bus/Train,avoiding plastic as far as possible, cycling, walking have all become part of my life. And despite what others might call self-denial, i am perhaps a happier soul than most others.Have i written this out of despair and angst? Perhaps,no.A sense of pride in my actions??Yes,but no pretensions to a superior sense of conscience. Is this dedication unswerving? May not be, might succumb to self-indulgent tastes. But the idea of judicious use will always loom around. Is this an ideology? Not at all for ideologies like religion cripples people. What is it?? It's just an idea ,which makes you feel proud without taking yourselves too seriously. Let's allow this idea to linger around for us to feel it,appreciate it and finally adopt it just as an idea without the fetters of ideology or religion..
